MURPHY AND BOESE AT REUNION GALLERY, FELIXSTOWE

Sharon Murphy and UK-based German painter Claudia Boese met and worked along-side each other as artists-in-residence in the Irish midlands in 2007. Strong empathy and similar concerns emerged between these two artists; that of exploring and defining edges on surfaces. This exhibition re-unites both artists once again as they display their subsequent work through painting, methods of construction and installation.
Claudia Boese’s practice focuses on the aesthetics of environment, intrigued by the disparity between locations and subjects as presented in imagery in contrast to their lived reality. Through these enquiries, allied to her handling of materials, she creates images that evoke something other than pure visual representation. Originally born in Germany she has lived and worked in Suffolk since 2002. This has allowed her to engage with the qualities and character of a border region, in this case rural and coastal, together with its cultural history.
Dublin based Sharon Murphy has exhibited widely in Ireland through sculpture, painting and installation. She arranges linear elements through processes that include weaving and the stacking of unfixed materials, all the while playing with strengths and weakness found in the materials. In her new work Murphy has looked at environments and objects which hold attractive linear and spatial qualities. The resulting work contains hints at urban architecture and small objects like printed text and African string instruments.
Reunion Gallery is the only dedicated Art Gallery in Felixstowe. It is situated in the heart of Felixstowe’s Artist Quarter, near the junction of Gainsborough Road and Felixstowe Road. The Gallery was set up in 2002 by artists Pat Todd and Verena Daniels with an objective to provide artists with a contemporary exhibiting space in Felixstowe.
